Arts Market New Orleans

Behind the Booth

Introducing Behind the Booth, the Arts Council’s new video series documenting Arts Market New Orleans artists in their studios and behind the scenes as they share the inspiration and creation process behind their work.

This month we present Maggie Covert. Maggie was born and raised in New Orleans and received her Bachelor’s degree from Maryland Institute College of Art in Interdisciplinary Sculpture with a Concentration in Books Arts. New Orleans has made a huge impact on her art, as the culture, vitality, and architecture are hard to escape. Her most recent work channels the whimsical nature of New Orleans’ architecture and characters. She continues to be drawn to details in the buildings and her landscape of her hometown. Seeing the beauty and tireless work in each structure, Maggie creates a connection to each establishment through the recreation of these in architectural drawings and paintings.

Lorna Williams is a sculpture artist living in New Orleans. Through a position with a pen manufacturing company, Williams learned to craft pens with a lathe, a machine that cuts and smooths stones into vibrant patterned casings. She received her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2010. She studied at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia. In 2009, she attended the Norfolk Program at Yale University. Her work has been exhibited at the Studio Museum Harlem, Harlem, NY; Montserrat College of Art, Beverly, MA; and University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA.
