Phil the Tremolo King | 1-2 and 2:30-3:30
Phil ‘the Tremolo King’ Vanderyken is one of those characters you will only find in the Big Easy. Born in Belgium, Phil immigrated to the US as a young hobo with a guitar and a few bucks, determined to follow his muse.
Phil and ‘the Uptown Downtown Orchestra” recently completed a five month residency at the Apple Barrel on Frenchmen Street and have played various local venues like AllWays Lounge, Tipitina’s, Dragon’s Den, Banks Street Bar, and the Palmer Park Arts Market. They also perform on a regular basis at the ‘Tip’s on the Tarmac’ series at Louis Armstrong airport and performed at the New Orleans Museum of Art on January 22nd.
From Django to tango, from Duke to Cash, from Istanbul to Buenos Aires, the Uptown Downtown Orchestra-Phil on guitar and vocals, Josh Wexler ( Dapper Dandies, Sarah Quintana) on accordion and piano , Steven Glenn ( Panorama Jazz Band, Magnetic Ear) or Alex Levy on tuba and Peter Orr on mandolin- juggle musical genres like there’s no tomorrow.
Phil has released several CD’s to critical acclaim, toured the Southwest by train, and organized a New Orleans event for Cassette Store Day at Euclid Records. Phil’s most recent music video, ‘the Wolf”, features Johnny Rock portraying the proverbial ‘wolf’ in his many hijinks.
Phil has shared the stage with the Dapper Dandies, Renshaw Davies, Blind Texas Marlin, This Stunted Sextette, the Wasted Lives, Natalie Mae Palms, Vic Ruggiero, and many more. He has played gigs in Belgium, Berlin, New York City, Austin, Los Angeles, and Phil the Tremolo King and his Uptown Downtown Orchestra are ready to amaze, intrigue and entertain audiences at your venue.
