Octavia Art Gallery is excited to participate in Prospect 1.5, presenting the exhibition “The Machine in the Garden,” featuring artists Brian Borrello, Ralph Borque, Daphne Loney, Christy Speakman and Michel Varisco.
Nature and technology have never really hit it off, perhaps because it is a universal human folly to believe that if enough technology is applied to any situation, nature can be brought under control.
The five Louisiana artists in this exhibition express through their work some of the implications of this deep-seeded conflict.
Brian Borrello seeks to create awareness of human life in balance with other life forms and our shared environment. Materials such as ink and charcoal reinforce the carboniferous origins of life on earth. The four works featured in the exhibition depict nightscapes marked by the influence of human industry. The starry skies are disrupted by the man-made structures so prevalent in our society.
Ralph Bourque presents six ink drawings inspired by nature and the subconscious. The subjects of these pieces are Louisiana animals and vegetation, but the content of the work speaks about the effects that darkness and light have on these things and how the dark presence of oil frames the lives of everyone on this planet.
Daphne Loney, a New Orleans-based sculptor inspired by fairy tales, will display a realistic, 6½-foot representation of a stuffed grizzly bear (complete with fake fur and plastic claws) hovering over a unicorn it has just killed.
Christy Speakman utilizes photography and video as a means to preserve found ephemera and explore notions of representation in the landscape. “Cosmic Territory” documents motor oil stains, using the length of Speakman’s body to measure microscopic galaxies of oil, water, tar and dust.
Michel Varisco presents photographs from the series “Shifting Lands.” Varisco’s work explores the relationship between individuals and their environment. The four images featured in the exhibition bring attention to the recent disaster befallen on the Gulf of Mexico.
