Francine Stock

Francine Stock’s work explores the latent concepts which bubble forth when everyday materials and forms combine in uncommon juxtaposition. Glass is her preferred medium for investigating conceptual relationships between materials as it is loaded with multiple meanings and associations. While we generally expect glass to be frail and somewhat dangerous, she reveals it’s strength and sensuality. She layers pieces of recycled window panes and fuses them together. Her glass elements are connected to aluminum, copper, fur, hemp and burlap in methods that evoke textile, bookbinding and the building arts. A recent series of TEXT::TILES examines the associations between books and walls, language and image, graffiti and art. A series of glass CHAINS evoke the idea and process of union.

Her work is influenced by studies of the history of philosophy, medieval bookmaking and modern architecture. In 1995 she had her first solo exhibit at the Chaos Gallery in New Orleans. She has since exhibited regularly in New Orleans, throughout Louisiana, and at the New York Art Exchange. She has received grants and awards from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art and the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. She is married to the sculptor Christian Stock. They have recently finished renovating a a studio complex in Central City New Orleans.
