Through our international partnership with Mexico, we expect to build an initiative with a similar three-year arc as the Turkish exchange. We view Mexico as a natural partner given its geographic proximity, the history of cultural and business relationships between New Orleans and Mexico, and the extremely high caliber of contemporary work being made by Mexican artists.
This initiative emerged out of a partnership with New Orleans’ Consulate General of Mexico. In 2014, the Arts Council began an ongoing collaboration with the Consulate General to periodically showcase Mexican artists in the Arts Council gallery space. In 2015, the Arts Council will sign a memorandum of understanding with important cultural partners in the Yucatán region. Looking ahead, we expect not only to ignite a visual art residency and exhibition exchange, but also to invite a Mexican video mapping practitioner to New Orleans to project onto iconic local architecture as part of our growing, week-long LUNA Fête event.
