Nick Stillman Promoted to Arts Council New Orleans President & CEO
Arts Council solidifies leadership and advances mission that art transforms communities
Arts Council New Orleans today announces the promotion of Nick Stillman from Arts Council Deputy Director to President & CEO. Stillman will be responsible for executing the Arts Council’s 2016 -2018 strategic plan and mission to transform community through art.
“The Arts Council is committed to using art to address New Orleans’ social and community issues and demonstrating that art is a tool for transformation,” Arts Council Board President E. Tiffany Adler said. “Nick has proven a focused and visionary leader with the background and expertise needed to move the Arts Council forward and enhance the strength and capabilities of New Orleans cultural community.”
Stillman played a leading role in the development of the strategic plan which positions the organization as a model for arts councils across the nation. During his tenure at the Arts Council New Orleans, the agency has developed a series of innovative initiatives including LUNA Fête, the Arts Council’s contemporary art + technology festival, and Youth Solutions, a program designed to address the persistence of youth violence and trauma through design thinking. Stillman will continue to develop these along with longstanding programs including the Arts Council’s management of the City of New Orleans Percent for Art program, Community Arts Grants, and the Arts Market New Orleans in Palmer Park.
“I’m very honored to assume this position, especially at this pivotal moment for our city,” Stillman said. “Just as the city of New Orleans is looking ahead to the 2018 Tricentennial, we too are focused on clearly demonstrating over the next three years how pivotal, transformative, and essential the arts are to New Orleans.”
Before joining the Arts Council, Stillman was Visiting Critic of Modern and Contemporary Art at the University of New Orleans. Prior to that, he was Managing Editor of BOMB magazine in New York. Between 2006-2007, Stillman curated eight exhibitions at PS1 Institute of Contemporary Art in New York, including the debut museum solo shows by Kalup Linzy, Amy Granat, and Joe Bradley as a member of the museum’s initial cohort of Curatorial Advisors. Stillman is also active as an art critic, regularly contributing to Artforum, Pelican Bomb, and several other publications.
Arts Council New Orleans is a private, multidisciplinary, nonprofit organization designated as the City’s official arts agency. The Arts Council’s mission is to support arts and culture and demonstrate how they transform communities.
